Reducing the Signs of Aging

Nowhere is aging more noticeable than on the face. There are a number of factors that contribute to the signs of aging including sun exposure, stress, heredity, smoking, alcohol consumption or inadequate diet and nutrition. To help reduce or eliminate the signs of aging, we perform a variety of procedures in the forehead, eyebrow areas, eyelids, as well as the mid and lower face regions. We also offer procedures that can minimize fine facial lines and wrinkles. Depending on your personal objectives and our recommendation, we can perform multiple facial procedures to give you a total face rejuvenation.

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure designed to diminish signs of aging in the face and neck. It can correct a variety of unwanted flaws, including wrinkling caused by loose and sagging skin,. jowls in the lower cheek area and skin folds in the neck. Although individuals who undergo facelifts continue to age, they maintain a more refreshed, revitalized appearance. Rhytidectomy procedures are often done in conjunction with blepharoplasty.

Facial rejuvenation is accomplished through an incision in the temple hairline extending in front of the ear and around the earlobe into the hair of the scalp. We reposition stretched muscles and tissue, and gently advance sagging skin upward and outward, trimming the excess. In most cases, the incision heals inconspicuously and will be partially hidden by surrounding hair.

Individuals who undergo a facelift notice an improved, rejuvenated appearance in just two weeks following the procedure. Patients may experience discomfort after the procedure, but significant pain is unusual. Facial swelling is common and may last three to five days. Bruising can be expected for two to three weeks. It is normal for patients to experience varying degrees of desensitization which is usually temporary.

A rhytidectomy can be performed at any age usually after 35. While the procedure does not stop the aging process; when performed before the age 50, it may prevent an individual from developing certain signs of aging such as sagging skin under the chin and in the jowls.

Brow Lift
As an individual ages and muscle tone diminishes in the forehead, furrows may develop along the brow, eyebrows may begin to droop and the eyes may appear smaller, more tired or sleepier than they actually are. A brow lift is designed to give the eyes a smoother, friendlier and more youthful appearance. The procedure not only improves the appearance of the eyes, but also eliminates or diminishes the age-related furrows, creases and frown line above and between the eyebrows.

During a brow lift, an incision is made at or slightly behind the hairline, where it will be completely hidden by surrounding hair. We carefully weaken the muscle that caused the furrows, and gently lift and stretch the skin, raising the eyebrows and creating a more alert appearance.

During the first three to five days following the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort, which can be controlled with prescribed pain relievers. For two weeks following the procedure, temporary swelling and bruising in the upper cheek area are common. Patients are encouraged to wear tinted glasses to help conceal these conditions.

Chemical Peel
A chemical peel can make an individual look years younger by removing and softening age-related wrinkles and premature wrinkling caused by sun exposure. The procedure evens the skin’s texture by chemically removing the outer layers and encouraging the formation of new skin cells. Depending on the degree of wrinkling, a light, medium or deep peel may be recommended. The effects of chemical peeling are particularly pleasing when combined with a facelift.
